It was once located on the northern slopes of the hills Coressus and Pion, and south of the Cayster River, whose silt has subsequently formed a fertile plain, but has also forced the coastline to drift further west. When Ephesus was formed (about 600 BCE), the Temple of Artemis, or Diana, to which the city owed much of its fame and which appears to mark the site of the classical Greek city, it was probably on the coast, one mile east by northeast of Pion (today Panayir Da). A challenging sea route was maintained in Roman times to a harbour west of Pion. Without more ado, let’s dive into the details of the Ephesus tour.

There are a slew of best places to visit in Turkey in winter, from skiing and winter hot balloon rides to relaxing in open-air hot springs. Explore Istanbul’s streets with the locals, get a soul-warming hammam treatment, hit the slopes, or visit remote archaeological sites without the throng. Turkey’s coastal towns never lose their shine, and the country’s natural treasures take on a new kind of radiance: all frozen lakes, ice-covered mountains, and snow-covered caverns.

Cappadocia

Cappadocia remains one of Turkey’s top winter attractions thanks to its stunning scenery, fascinating history, and bucket-list-worthy hot air balloon rides. Winter visitors to Cappadocia may find it more delightful than summer visitors, when people swarm the region and temperatures soar. From late November to early March, there is generally a lot of snow in Cappadocia, which adds to the atmosphere.

The breathtaking landscapes of Cappadocia, sculpted by centuries of volcanic eruptions, are unforgettably beautiful. This craggy and yet calm setting is breathtaking no matter what time of year it is. Cappadocia’s dry environment is ideal for hiking for those with a sense of adventure.

4 Days Turkey Tour – Cappadocia Nemrut Gobeklitepe SanlıUrfa

Istanbul

The most popular winter city break location in Turkey is Istanbul. Istanbul’s year-round treasure trove of sights and unique experiences comes into its own when the weather is chilly and there are few people on the streets. Popular tourist attractions in this endlessly gorgeous city will be relatively deserted in the winter, so take advantage of it.

Istanbul has a diverse range of attractions, from fascinating museums to quiet gardens and bustling bazaars. There are just too many wonderful restaurants and cafes where you can sample Turkish cuisine to list them all. Start each day with a warm cup of Turkish coffee, which is a UNESCO-listed culinary tradition.

Among the places in Istanbul you must visit are its historic mosques, the Hagia Sophia, Ortakoy Mosque and Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Taksim, the Basilica Cistern, Galata Tower, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, and of course the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar.

11 Days Turkey and Jordan Tour-Istanbul Cappadocia Jordan Istanbul

Ephesus

The ancient city of Ephesus is one of Turkey’s most well-known archaeological monuments, and during the summer, it is by far the most popular historical destination. This is because cruise ships arrive in nearby Kusadasi every day, bringing thousands of tourists. While Ephesus is still popular in the winter, the crowds are significantly reduced compared to the summer months, giving you more time to admire the ancient remains and hike the surrounding hills. Ephesus in one of the best places to visit in Turkey in winter.

Bolu

Many folks assume Bolu Province, which is located halfway between Istanbul and Ankara, when they think of pretty tiny towns with vernacular Ottoman architecture. However, this region also has amazing natural beauty that changes with the seasons. Bolu, just a short drive from Istanbul, becomes a popular weekend getaway spot as summer draws to a close. The city is bathed in a sea of golden and rust by fall, and it is blanketed in snow by winter.

The Kackar Mountains

The Kackar Mountains, with their snow-capped peaks and steep cliffs, are a sight for sore eyes – and a reminder that some of Turkey’s most beautiful spots are found in nature. The mountain slopes, which are located behind the Black Sea Coast and the Rize tea area, are steep, partly wooded, and ideal for winter ski expeditions. Several sloping alpine pastures provide excellent downhill opportunities. The mountains are considered one of the most beautiful places in Turkey.

Izmir

Izmir, a summer destination known for its beautiful beaches, takes on a different type of beauty in the winter. During the winter months, the streets of this bustling port city on the Aegean Coast are mostly deserted, as most people (reasonably!) retire indoors. Even in the dead of winter, Izmir’s Alsancak market is lively, and Alacati’s streets are charming. The thermal baths and hot springs in the Balcova district provide a unique winter experience.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale, or ‘Cotton Castle,’ is another Turkish winter wonder worth visiting. This is a popular year-round destination where visitors may enjoy nature at its best. Pamukkale’s naturally warm water, first used as a spa resort by the Romans in the 2nd century BC, is the ideal balm for cold feet. The mineral-rich warm waters that overflow from the stacked travertine terraces cast lovely shapes and patterns as they tumble down.

While Pamukkale, one of the best places to visit Turkey in winter, might be chilly in the winter, there are still lots of things to do and see, such as the Greco-Roman ruins of Hierapolis and Cleopatra’s Pool.

Paquete turístico de 7 días por Turquía: lo más destacado de Turquía

The Uludag Mountains

The Uludag Mountains are home to one of Turkey’s most prominent ski resorts, with 28 kilometres of slopes for beginners and experienced skiers. The bulk of people ascend the mountain via the Uludag cable car, which takes around 25 minutes to complete and is Turkey’s longest at 9 kilometres.

The ski season is unquestionably the most popular time to visit Uludag, with locals and foreign tourists alike flocking to the resort for skiing and snowboarding. Even if you’re not a skier, there’s enough to do away from the slopes. A snow safari is a great way to enjoy this winter wonderland without having to put on your skis.

Bursa

Bursa, one of the largest cities in northwestern Turkey, has a wide range of activities to entice curious visitors. It offers an amazing backdrop of beautiful mountains, as it sits at the foot of the Uludag range. Because of its many parks and gardens, the city is known as “Green Bursa.” And here’s one for the foodies: this is where the famed Iskender kebab is made!

Many historical structures in Bursa, including the Ulu Cami, Yildirim Bazaar, and Karagoz Museum, have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It has a beautiful aspect in both the summer and winter, and there are many indoor and outdoor activities to choose from.

1 Day Bursa Tour From Istanbul

Kars

Kars, one of the best places to visit Turkey in winter, is unlike any other Turkish city, especially in the winter. When summer arrives in Kars, the temperature remains warm throughout the day and cool at night. The hottest month in the summer is August, with an average temperature of 26 °C. If that’s how we feel in the summer, imagine how we’ll feel when winter comes to Kars.

Yes, Kars’ winter is spectacular. The winters are bitterly cold in this part of the world. In January, the average temperature is -16 degrees Celsius. And it can suddenly drop to -35 °C. Kars has a ski centre in Sarkamş where visitors can enjoy the snow. Skiers who enjoy cross-country skiing, ski touring, and alpine skiing will enjoy the conditions at this ski resort. Kars has a prolonged winter, with up to 120 days of snowfall.

UNESCO has 1,154 World Heritage Sites on its list as of July 2021, including 897 cultural, 218 natural, and 39 combined properties. While these sites can be located in 167 countries, the addition of the Arslantepe Mound brings Turkey’s total to 19 global treasures. Take a closer look at these historical wonders of Turkey to learn more about the wonderful stories the country has to share.

Pergamon

Pergamon and its surrounding rich cultural landscape, situated in Turkey’s Aegean province of Izmir, were put on the list in 2014. According to UNESCO, Pergamon’s acropolis was a major centre of learning in the ancient world as the capital of the Hellenistic Attalid monarchy.

“Monumental temples, theaters, stoa (a covered walkway or portico), gymnasium, altar, and library were set into the sloping terrain surrounded by an extensive city wall.”

The relics of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires may be seen in and around Pergamon, which is now recognized as Bergama, with structures symbolising Paganism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

Carl Humann, a German engineer, was the first to discover the city’s ruins in the 1870s. Pergamon boasted a 50,000-seat amphitheatre, a 30,000-seat theatre, the ancient world’s second largest library, and the world’s first hospital, to name a few attractions. Only the Viran Kap (Ruined Gate) remains now as the theater’s remaining arch.

Ephesus

In 2015, the world-famous ancient city of Ephesus – one of the historical wonders of Turkey, also in Izmir province, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Ephesus is an ancient Greek village that eventually became a significant Roman city in Selçuk, with a rich cultural history dating back to 6500 B.C. Under Roman administration, the ancient city reached its pinnacle, becoming the capital of Asia Minor, now known as Anatolia, in the 20s B.C. The city is now a prominent tourist attraction on Turkey’s western coast, which is understandable.

The United Nations body honours “great monuments of the Roman Imperial period,” such as the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater, which were discovered during excavations. “Little remains of the famed Temple of Artemis, one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World,’ which drew travellers from all across the Mediterranean,” the article continues. It also mentions that the House of the Virgin Mary, a chapel near Ephesus, has become a Christian pilgrimage site.

7 Days Turkey Tour Package – Highlights of Turkey

Bursa and Cumalıkızık

Bursa and the adjoining village of Cumalkzk – the best places to visit in Turkey – in northeastern Turkey were added to the UNESCO list in 2014 as part of a serial nomination of eight component sites. Cumalkzk is the only rural community “to demonstrate the provision of hinterland assistance for the capital.”

The area, one of the wonders of Turkey “embodies the fundamental roles of the social and economic organisation” of the Ottomans’ first capital, which “developed around a civic centre,” according to the site, which “illustrates the emergence of an urban and rural system creating the Ottoman Empire in the early 14th century.”

Historic areas of Istanbul

Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, has been linked to major political, religious, and artistic events for more than 2,000 years, according to the United Nations. In 1985, UNESCO added four historical areas of Istanbul’s ancient peninsula to its World Heritage List. The Sultanahmet Urban Archaeological Component Area, the Süleymaniye Mosque and its Associated Component Area, the Zeyrek Mosque (the Pantocrator’s Monastery) and its Associated Component Area, and the Istanbul Land Walls Component Area are the places in question.

The Hippodrome of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia, Hagia Eirene, Little Hagia Sophia Mosque, and Topkap Palace make up the Sultanahmet Urban Archaeological Component Area.

Suleiman I, popularly known as Suleiman the Magnificent, commissioned Mimar Sinan to construct the Süleymaniye Mosque. The construction was intended as a complex that could suit both the city’s religious and cultural demands, and it was added to the UNESCO list.

Ephesus, which was founded by Greek colonialists in the 10th century BC, is one of the best-preserved ancient towns. When the Ionians ruled the land, it was one of the principal cities. Ephesus has remained a commercial hub in the Mediterranean since then, and was particularly well-known in Roman times for its abundance and civilisation. Ephesus became immensely popular among all strata of society as a result of its flamboyance, and its population grew to almost 200 thousand people. This environment was ideal for spreading Christianity, and as a result, early Christian activities left many antiquities in the town, including the Basilica of St John. Most people wonder why you need a tour guide in Ephesus because it takes around three hours to view the historic city.

2 Days Ephesus Pamukkale Tour From Istanbul

Ephesus is a city in Western Turkey with a coastline on the Aegean Sea and is not far from Izmir, one of Turkey’s major provinces. Unless you are doing a shore trip, the easiest way to get to Ephesus is via fly because Izmir has an airport and there are frequent flights from nearby cities as well as some international flights. Then it’s around an hour’s drive from Izmir to Ephesus. Because public transit is insufficient, you will require transportation to visit Izmir.

Although audio guides are available to borrow, because the ruins are mostly ruined and not in the same condition as they once were, visiting with a guide is usually beneficial in order to envision the town properly and completely comprehend the facts beyond the fundamentals. The Library of Celsus, the Curetes Way, the Terraced Houses, and the Temple of Artemis are just a few of the must-see attractions. During your personalised guided tour of Ephesus, you can ask the questions to the guide in Ephesus that intrigue you and listen to the mythology of the ancient city’s diverse culture and history.

4 Days Turkey Tour – Cappadocia Ephesus Pamukkale Tour

As previously said, the tour lasts approximately three hours, allowing you to spend nearly another half day exploring the surrounding area. Getting a guide and a vehicle makes this much easier, as it allows you to see the Virgin Mary’s House and drive to the picturesque historical Sirince Village, where you may sample the famed fruit wines. On the route to Sirince, Selcuk will be the finest spot to stop for lunch; here you may find some of the tastiest lamb skewers you’ve ever had. Thus, it becomes essential to have a guide in Ephesus with you.

The number of visitors to Ancient City of Ephesus in the Selçuk neighbourhood of Izmir began to climb again after the epidemic. The total number of visitors had reached 476,000 as of September 30th. By the end of the year, we anticipate this figure to reach around 600,000.

Before the epidemic, the Ancient City of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by an average of 1 million tourists per year, began to restore to its former glory. Tourists are returning to the region, according to Cengiz Topal, director of the Ephesus Archaeological Museum. By the end of the year, we expect this figure to reach around 600,000. Our overall number of visitors was roughly 380,000 last year. We estimate that we will end the year with a 50 percent rise.

According to Topal, the entrance of cruise ships has had an impact on the number of guests. Our visitor potential began to grow with the entrance of cruise ships. We’ve learnt that there will be a lot of ship traffic in the ports of Kusadasi and Izmir next year. As a result, we anticipate a significant increase. Due to the epidemic, a number of sites were prohibited, and people were unable to achieve their basic needs, such as socialisation and access to cultural areas. After that, we believe the number of visitors will continue to rise.

Rany Andrew, a cruise ship visitor who visited Ancient City of Ephesus, stated,

“This is my first time in Turkey. I absolutely love it. People are amazing. The culture is beautiful. The historical texture in the Ancient City of Ephesus is very beautiful. There is a lot to learn here.”

Tourist guide Tivana Blatmaz of Russia said,

“Today we have a group. We tell them about Ephesus. There’s a very big ship here. We’re very happy. There was a decrease in the crowd due to coronavirus. Now we’re all vaccinated. I hope we will be better off.”

Matrew Minaen, a Ukrainian who claims to have ridden his motorcycle across the world, stated,

“This is the third time I have come here. I like to travel. There are many tourists in Ephesus. There are very large historical buildings.”
